Our Approach to Education

Educating Greatness

At Flamingo School we follow the New National Curriculum and Assessment Policy (CAPS). We are committed to excellence in education.

CAPS states the importance of critical thinking, although CAPS is mostly an instructive syllabus, learners must recall content, which forms the base of assessment. CAPS also gives clear guidance of assessments to assess the learner’s ability of the work done in the classroom.

We have a register class teaching approach from grades 1 – 3. From grades 4 – 7, we do subject teaching, although each class still functions as a register class with a register teacher.

We want our learners to become self-reliant and multi-skilled, whilst developing their sense of uniqueness.

Language Approach

The language of instruction is English as Home Language and Afrikaans as First Additional Language. All teaching, exercise and practical material are provided in English.

Learners will firstly have to undergo an interview process before being accepted to Flamingo Primary. This interview tests their fluency and level of understanding in English. It also gives learners the opportunity to share a little bit about themselves.

At the beginning of each year, every learner writes an English and Mathematics Baseline Assessment to ensure that any information that was not retained in their previous school year, is brought to light. This allows a strong foundation to be laid as the teacher becomes aware of problem areas and can fill the gaps where necessary.

On a case-by-case basis, as determined by the respective teachers, learners who struggle with adjusting to the academic flow at Flamingo Primary will be assisted with intervention work. Intervention work aids the learner to be able to read, write and do Mathematics at their grade’s standards.

At Flamingo Primary, we value and promote multilingualism. We want learners to be as fluent in English and Afrikaans as they are in their mother-tongue.
