Flamingo School

Who we are

At Flamingo School, we understand that the road to success requires more than education alone. We embrace and value the process of laying a foundation from which successful education can be built. Our school is value-driven, with emphasis being placed on respect, a sense of belonging, friendship, security and mindfulness. We are there to take hands with our parents and learners through every obstacle in order for them to be successful.

At Flamingo School, we commit to a high standard of education.
We offer all learners equal opportunities, through the guidance of committed and caring educators in a happy and secure learning environment. Flamingo learners are encouraged to work hard every day.

Our Educators are passionate about education and lead by example. The care and love that the educators show for the children are evident in their work. All educators teach each child, taking into consideration, their individual abilities, talents and shortcomings.
We know that our learners today will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Our History

Flamingo School was founded by Miss Annalie Germishuizen, a woman with a big dream. In 2007, Miss Annalie started a day-care, Gummy Bears, which soon grew into something bigger.

As the years passed, she realised that her little ones will need a well-rounded and safe environment for further education.

She decided to provide what they needed and started with her first Grade R class in 2014, at this stage her daughter Mrs Natasja Dreyer joined the team. In 2015 they started with a big Grade 1 class and a smaller Grade 2 class; each year adding the next grade. By 2019 they realised their dreams were bigger than the property they had at that time and then relocated to the current property, opening the doors to a brand new school in January 2020. In 2021, they had their first Grade 7 class at Flamingo School.

We at Flamingo are so proud of every learner that have passed through our gates, we look forward to watch every current learner grow and reach their full potential.

Our philosophy

At Flamingo School we believe in leading by example. Our goal is to provide learners with a safe environment away from home with teachers who are able to take the role of parents, at school. We understand that children are more likely to succeed if they are taught in an environment where they feel safe and have role models to look up to and to go to, for advice. We discipline with reward, reversing the process of punishment, and implement a system where learners strive to do better in order to do their parents, teacher and fellow students proud. We also understand that every learner is a unique individual and that behaviour is a direct reflection of the emotions that they have, due to experience in their social lives.

Our language approach

The language of instruction is English as Home Language and Afrikaans as First Additional Language. All teaching, exercise and practical material are provided in English. Learners will firstly have to undergo an interview process before being accepted to Flamingo Primary. This interview tests their fluency and level of understanding in English. It also gives learners the opportunity to share a little bit about themselves.

At the beginning of each year, every learner writes an English and Mathematics Baseline Assessment to ensure that any information that was not retained in their previous school year, is brought to light. This allows a strong foundation to be laid as the teacher becomes aware of problem areas and can fill the gaps where necessary.

On a case-by-case basis, as determined by the respective teachers, learners who struggle with adjusting to the academic flow at Flamingo Primary will be assisted with intervention work. Intervention work aids the learner to be able to read, write and do Mathematics at their grade’s standards.

At Flamingo Primary, we value and promote multilingualism. We want learners to be as fluent in English and Afrikaans as they are in their mother-tongue.

Being an independent school

We aim to offer education of quality. With classes that is a manageable size it allows us to imagine greatness without boundaries. We believe in an UBUNTU approach. Our educators create a supportive and compassionate environment for each and every learner.

At Flamingo we strive to help and support every learner because today’s learners are tomorrow’s leaders.

Future plans for our school

We, at Flamingo School, strive to create the best future for every learner who enters our gates. We want to maintain our excellent standard in class with discipline and academics.

Moving forward, we want to take the Pom-Poms and choir to the next level and become even better on the sport field. By taking hands with our community and parents, we strive to bring back our legendary Foundation Phase concert in our own hall. We are also very excited for the future development of our schoolgrounds, and we aim to expand the school one step at a time, by adding Grade 8 classes in 2024.

OUR ETHOS

Our Vision

Flamingo School’s vision is to build a strong educational foundation for children. We aim to develop students who demonstrate respect, integrity, responsibility and growth.

“Learners today,
leaders tomorrow”

Our Mission

At Flamingo School, educators and parents from our diverse community work together to ensure that the society which the children live in is safe and accessible, and that the needs of every child is addressed. We strive to promote the talents of every learner and, through this, we encourage holistic development. Learners are taught to have self-discipline, accountability, resilience, respect and compassion through the educators who lead by example. In our school, recognition is given to excellence in any school activities, and this motivates learners to be multi-skilled and to be proud of their diverse abilities. Our educators are committed to shaping the best futures for the learners and they strive to cultivate a positive environment where every student feels comfortable to reach their full potential.

Communities that surround the school

Flamingo School is situated in the vibrant community of Aliwal North that is rich with potential. Many young families reside here, and it is a safe and beautiful environment for children to grow up in. Many of our children come from as far as Burgersdorp, Jamestown and Rouxville. Parents in the community value the importance of good education and the children are taught good values at home and the importance of hard work, in order to achieve excellence.
